BounceBack Kids (formerly known as Hoop Dreams Basketball Academy) is a Section 501(c) (3) nonprofit based in the Triangle whose mission is to enrich the lives of children with serious medical conditions and their families through free year-round recreational, athletic, and social activities offered in a caring and supportive environment that is medically safe.
BounceBack Kids provides group and individual sports sessions, recreational and social events, a College Planning Guide, and support services. All BounceBack Kids offerings are free for participants, their siblings and parents.
There is no charge for children to participate in BounceBack Kids activities.
Participants in BounceBack Kids are children who have a serious medical condition.
We have children who have a variety of medical conditions including cancer, asthma, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, bi-lateral kidney disease, Crohn’s, ulcerative- colitis, and lupus. A child must have a doctor’s permission to participate in BounceBack Kids’ sports program.
Children who participate in BounceBack Kids range in age from 3-21. The program is open to all children who meet our eligibility criteria both chronologically and developmentally. If you would like to refer a child, please print and return our particiation form and medical form.
Approximately 100 kids participate in BounceBack Kids activities.
Mike Zeillmann a noted basketball skills instructor teaches many of our Basketball Skills Instruction sessions. Licensed trainers from Empower Personal Training in Durham teach many of our group and individual fitness sessions.
BounceBack Kids offers basketball instruction at the Emily Krzyzewski Family Life Center, a community resource near downtown Durham. BounceBack Kids offers its fitness program at Empower Personal Training, a fitness studio in Durham.
BounceBack Kids was founded in 2003 by three caring and committed men – Bill Jessup, a successful businessman with a love of sports and giving back to the community; Henry Friedman, a prominent neuro-oncologist who is co-director of the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University; and Mike Zeillmann, a talented basketball coach who has trained NBA players, members of the Duke University women’s team, and many school-age players.
A volunteer Board of Directors guides BounceBack Kids. Members of the Board include Nancy Butters; Henry S. Friedman, M.D.; Kevin Leibel; Kirk Michel; Barry Roberts; Lisa Salzman, Jim Stockman, M.D., Patrick Togni, and Jennifer Williams. These community leaders are notable for their expertise in medicine, sports, marketing, and business.
A Medical Advisory Board, consisting of doctors from UNC, Duke, and the community, provides professional input and assistance to the BounceBack Kids Board of Directors and staff with medical issues arising from the operation of the athletic instruction that BounceBack Kids provides.
To date, BounceBack Kids has received funds from Bill Jessup, the Spalding Corporation, the Hillsdale Fund, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, the Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation, Duke University Hospital, the University of North Carolina Hospitals, the National Basketball Association, and many individuals. BounceBack Kids has been the primary beneficiary of the Duke-UNC Student Basketball Marathon since its inception in 2006. BounceBack Kids is thankful to have received in-kind donations of laptops from the Kramden Institute and cooking sessions from Classy Kids Cook.
Yes,BounceBack Kids will accept many kinds of contributions, including stocks, bonds, real estate, bequests, and other types of planned giving. BouncBack Kids also accepts in-kind donations.

You will receive a thank-you note from our staff as well as the documentation required by federal law for all donations of $250 or more.
